The Cumbria Way is a linear 112-kilometre (71-mile) long-distance footpath in Cumbria, England. Originally devised by the Local Ramblers Association it is now a popular journey across our wonderful county, showcasing some spectacular scenery.
We will aim to complete the route over 6 days, which although the distances may seem large, there are only 2 days with big hills and this is a realistic way to divide up a summer journey.
Itinerary:
Train to Ulverston (could be done the night before and stay over or early on the morning of day 1).
Day 1 - Ulverston to Coniston – 24 km (7 – 8 hours)
Day 2 – Coniston to Langdale (Elterwater possibly) – 18km (6 hours)
Day 3 – Langdale to Rossthwaite 13km (6 hours)
Day 4 – Rossthwaite to Keswick 13km (5 hours)
Day 5 – Keswick to Caldbeck 23km (8-9 hours)
Day 6 – Caldbeck to Carlisle 23km (8 hours) – (possibility to Caldbeck to Dalston and the final section by train if the diversion route is still in place.)
The plan for this walk is for it to be a self-organised, professionally guided trip which will mean that you will pay me only for the guiding part of this trip and you will arrange your own transport, accommodation and if you want it baggage transfer. Currently this is the only way I can legally provide this trip unless I take out a very expensive bond. The Package Holiday regulations are due to change in 2026 in the UK which may mean I can offer the whole package but for now this is how things will work. Please ask if you want to understand this better.
As this trip has many moving parts; I will not accept any payment for this trip until I have a minimum of 4 people committed to going. You can register your interest below. Once I have 4 people I will let you know and you can book accommodation. If you want to come you will need to commit early as accommodation will book up.
Approximate Costs:
Guiding fee: £420pp
Accommodation and food: allow a minimum of £60 per day (the last night in Caldbeck will be more expensive than the others as there is no hostel option).
Baggage Transfer _if required): £132 per person (ish) and requires 2 people to get this price.
Train tickets not yet available but approx. £20
Total anticipated cost - approx. £900 - £1000 (more if you want alternative accommodation!)
