What might I see on a Team Tortoise Walk?

Want to get a feel for what it might be like to come on a Team Tortoise Walk? This is the first of a series of blog posts covering what we might see, hear, feel and talk about on our walk.

What might I see on a Team Tortoise Walk?

What we tend to hope for on any venture into the mountains is that we see some amazing things. The first thing we tend to think of is views. So far this year we have been blessed with generally fantastic weather, and we have had opportunities to take in the wide expanse of views that the Lake District has to offer. It’s also nice to know what it is we are looking at as this helps us to think about future adventures but also to relate where we are now to where we might have been before. Having walked in these hills for a great number of years, I’m pretty good at reeling off a list of the summits on the near and far horizons. Sometimes though if the angle is unusual or the light plays tricks on scale and distance it’s useful to get a map out and have a look together and work these things out. On a Team Tortoise walk there is plenty of time factored in for this sort of thing, so if you want more photos, more time to sit and stare it’s all possible!

Here are some of the images I have captured on Team Tortoise walks so far this year.

Sometimes however on a walk day the weather doesn’t play so kindly and distant views are fleeting or absent. Worry not, there are plenty of other cool things to see. My passions are upland plants and animals, rocks and landforms. Some of these are easier to photograph than others but as you can see from the selection below there are some fascinating things to see in the UK mountains, I can help you learn about them, how to identify them, and usually provide you with some memorable facts to take away with your photos. I am also experienced enough with groups to know when a topic doesn’t float everyone’s boat so don’t panic that I’m going to talk endlessly about something that doesn't excite you. However, I encourage you to be curious, I am a newbie to plant geekery and I’ve found the journey fantastic.
